We’re seeking a Grave Digger to join our Chorley-based Cemetery team. In this role, you will be responsible for meticulously preparing and presenting graves, ensuring they are dignified resting places. Your work will reflect the respect and reverence owed to those who have passed, providing comfort to their loved ones. By maintaining gravesites with precision and sensitivity, you will help create a serene and respectful environment for families to remember and honour their loved ones.

What you’ll be getting up to
  • To prepare the ground and surrounding area for the digging of and backfilling of graves, including the moving of adjacent headstones, providing protection to the ground, assessing the ground conditions and carrying out dynamic risk assessments to ensure that works can be done safely, including the preparation of Muslim burial chambers

  • To receive grave details and be responsible in the locating of graves.

  • Be present at burial to carry out internment of coffin/ ashes.

  • To advise clients and the public on the location of existing graves or potential burial plots.

  • To interact with families of the deceased to advise and implement the Cemeteries Policies to ensure that graves and associated tributes are compliant.  

  • To carry out memorial safety inspections and input data and undertake emergency stabilisation of headstones as required.

  • To operate grounds maintenance machinery, excavators and vehicles. To complete pre-use checks of both vehicles and machinery and to record as directed.

  • To carry out general Streetscene tasks such as grounds maintenance and street cleansing as required e.g. mowing, hoeing, sweeping, weeding, raking, edging, manuring, mulching, strimming, hedge maintenance, shrub bed maintenance,tree/shrub planting, hard landscape works, seasonal bedding maintenance and planting, clearing leaves and litter, loading and unloading of barrows, trailers, vehicles, sweeping and litter collection.

    To operate digital systems to access and record work.

Who we’re looking for
  • Accredited 180 Degree
  • Excavation Grave Digging qualification, safety in the burial process
  • Experience of operating excavators and grave digging processes.
  • Experience of working with light plant equipment
  • General horticultural knowledge such as shrub maintenance, landscaping works, seasonal bedding and turf care.
  • Cemetery operational procedures & policies
Other requirements
  • This role requires travel around our boroughs. You should have a valid driving licence.
