About The Role

Role: Graduate Climate Change Officer
Location: South Ribble Borough Council, Civic Centre
ContractFull time (36.25 hours per week) / Fixed Term Contract (24 months)

Are you passionate about the environment and sustainability and securing it for future generations? Do you have effective data analysis and mapping skills alongside great customer care and engagement capabilities and the flair to support multiple projects?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our small Climate Change Team and provide crucial support in delivering our Green Agenda from decarbonisation to biodiversity projects.  Working across the Council and wider Borough, you will be a key player in delivering the Council’s Climate, Air Quality and Biodiversity Strategies and supporting Action Plans and helping us progress towards our Net Zero targets.

What you’ll be getting up to

South Ribble declared a climate emergency in 2019 and is committed to work in this area, making climate and biodiversity corporate priorities. You will contribute to the development and delivery of the Council’s work around climate, air quality and biodiversity by

  • Supporting the delivery of corporate climate, air quality and biodiversity projects
  • Supporting the preparation of reports and grant applications by researching, collecting, analysing and mapping data
  • Carrying out site checks and surveys across the Borough to ensure we are delivering our promised actions
  • Supporting the work of the Climate Emergency Task Group (a cross-party group of elected members championing the climate work of the Council)
  • Supporting and collaborating with Officers across the Council to deliver climate related projects
  • Engaging with our network of external partners, schools and community groups, to listen to ideas and support project development and implementation.
  • Supporting at events to deliver the climate, biodiversity and air quality message
 Who we’re looking for
  • The successful candidate will have a recent degree in environmental management, sustainability, ecology or related field that means you have experience in one or more of the key themes in climate, air quality and / or biodiversity and be keen to learn about the other areas.
  • You will have a good working knowledge of GIS (ideally QGIS)
  • You will have strong data capture, analysis and reporting skills
  • You will have experience of conducting research and using evidence to draw conclusions
  • You will have the ability to think flexibly, innovatively and resourcefully to solve problems and create solutions
  • You will have strong organisational skills and be able to juggle a varied workload
  • Experience of working in a public facing role (paid or voluntary) would be an advantage
  • Essential is the willingness to work with a wide variety of different stakeholders from schools, community groups, businesses and general public as well as officers across different Council departments to support and affect behaviour change.
Other requirements
  • This role requires some travel around our boroughs. You should have a valid driving license and access to a vehicle.
