About The Role

Role: Exercise Specialist (Cancer Prehab & Rehab)
Location: South Ribble & Chorley Leisure Centres
Contract: Part Time (27 hours per week) / Fixed Term Contract (15 months)
Salary: £30,151- £31,664
Closing Date: 17 August 2025

We are looking for a passionate and experienced exercise specialist to work on an exciting new pathway for cancer patients within Lancashire. Prehab has been shown to positively impact patients undergoing cancer treatment, by reducing side effects, increasing general health, and empowering patients.

The prehab service will incorporate specialist care from Dietitians, Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals (LTHTR), and an Exercise Specialist working across South Ribble, and Chorley Leisure centres.

This will involve patients diagnosed with colorectal, UGI and lung cancer who are undertaking any kind of treatment, including palliative oncology. Therefore, the successful applicant will need to demonstrate effective communication and listening skills.

The programme will empowers patients to take back control of their diagnosis, build resilience ahead of intense cancer-related treatment and improve patients' quality of life.

Whilst employed by South Ribble Leisure there will be communication and support including initial and ongoing training from LTHTR.

What you’ll be getting up to
  • Work within 1:1 clinics as well as offering group work within the leisure centres providing cancer specialist physiotherapy input and support to people diagnosed with cancer to promote on-going recovery with prehab and rehab needs.
  • Coordinate and deliver prehab and rehab programmes for cancer patients
  • Manage a diverse patient caseload
  • Work with the Programme Manager to develop and implement programme plans
  • Undertake advanced diagnosis, assessment and treatment of people diagnosed with specific cancers and preparing for surgery, to assist people adapt and cope with living with the long-term physical consequences of cancer treatment including breathlessness, continence and consequences of treatment.
  • Update all patient records in line with professional code of conduct, clinical governance and risk management at each contact and instigate appropriate and timely communication of information to the patients primary and secondary care teams.
  • Activity and exercise management advice for low-risk patients on self-managed follow-up pathways including supporting health and well being events.
  • Advise and educate patients and their families/carers on the management of individual problems.
Who we’re looking for
  •  You - if you hold Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation Exercise qualification or are willing to attend a course in September
  •  You - if you have professional experience of working in a healthcare environment or similar experience.
  •  You  - if you have professional experience in using behavioural change techniques to support improvement and wellbeing.
  •  You - if you have the capability to conduct remote fitness testing.
  •  You - if you have the ability to create personalised programs for patients.
  •  You - if you are comfortable using evolving technology.
  •  You - if you have excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  •  You - if you are passionate about helping people get healthy and fit.
  •  You - if you have the ability to show empathy, compassion and understand difficulties faced by people affected by cancer.
Other requirements
  • This role requires some travel around our boroughs. You should have a valid driving licence or the equivalent mobility. 
  • This role requires you to regularly use a vehicle therefore you must possess a valid UK Driving Licence.
  • Successful applicants will be subject to a DBS check (applied and paid for by the Council).
