About The Role

Role: Environmental Crime Enforcement Officer
Location: Bengal Street Depot
Contract: Full time (36.15 hours per week) / 12 Month Fixed Term Contract
Salary: £31,537 - £33,699

Do you want to ensure that our borough continues to be a safe and green place for our communities? Do you have experience in enforcement? Are you passionate about the environment? If this describes you, we are looking to recruit a new Environmental Crime Enforcement Officer in our Chorley team.

In this role you will be part of a team proactively working to respond and deal with a variety of environmental crime issues, such as abandoned vehicles, dog fouling and fly tipping. You will support the Council and other partners in preventing environmental crime. 
You will work with a variety of different stakeholders and the public, therefore fantastic communication skills and the ability to handle difficult situations and customers are key.
What you’ll be getting up to
  • Organise and manage own workload and carry out duties independently, responding to customer enquiries and complaints, determining the best course of action for individual cases.
  • carry out enforcement investigations and evidence gathering on a wide range of environmental crime issues, including formal interviewing under caution and disclosure to solicitors.
  • Undergo formal and informal action against individuals/organisations breaching a wide range of environmental crime legislations within the provisions of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE).
  • Preparation of investigation reports /prosecutions files and provide expert witness evidence in court.
  • Conduct targeted enforcement duties including surveillance in accordance with and having regard for the requirements of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA).
  • To serve formal notices, including Statutory Notices, Duty of Care notices and Community Protection Notices and to issue Formal Cautions and Fixed Penalty Notices.
  • To report and respond, to advise and negotiate, persuade arbitrate and take enforcement action to resolve as appropriate incidents of environmental crime, including fly-tipping, littering, dog fouling, graffiti and abandoned vehicles.
  • Keep up to date with environmental and waste enforcement legislation.
Who we’re looking for
  • You will have a good knowledge of environmental enforcement.
  • You will be an excellent team-player, as you will work closely with other teams in the Council and with the public.
  • You might ne CIWM accredited or willing to work towards this.
Other requirements
  • This role requires you to regularly use a vehicle, therefore you must possess a valid UK Driving Licence.
  • This role requires you to work some evenings and weekends occasionally.
  • Successful applicants will be subject to a DBS check (applied and paid for by the Council).
