About The Role

Role: Building Control Technician
Location: Chorley / South Ribble
Contract: Full time (36.25 hours per week) /Permanent
Salary: £34,434 - £37,280
Closing Date: 24 August 2025

Following a review of the service we are seeking a Building Control Technician to work within the shared Building Control Team between Chorley and South Ribble Councils. We are a positive and friendly team that can offer hybrid and flexible working from day one. We are looking for motivated people who looking to make the next step of their career and ready to hit the ground running plan checking, carrying out site inspections, attending dangerous structures, demolitions and taking enforcement action when needed. We are a supportive team and have plenty of room for development should you want to progress further in your classifications. What you’ll be getting up to
  • Providing expertise in relation to more complex building control cases including site inspections and plan checking in line with minimum Classification 2A of the Building Safety Regulatory requirements.
  • Carrying out enforcement action for unauthorised works and if work on site is in breach of the requirements of the regulations.
  • Liaising with the Fire & Rescue service to ensure the safety of buildings.
  • Ensuring that demolition works are carried out in accordance with safe working practices and risk assessments and in compliance with the Building Act 1984.
  • Ensuring that records and documents are updated on the council’s document management system showing compliance with the Operational Standards Rules. 
  • Identifying fees to be charged to clients for fee-charging work.
Who we’re looking for
  • Ambition and dedication, and someone who enjoys working in Local Government
  • Experience of carrying out the full range of building control functions on both domestic and commercial buildings
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information or difficult messages to a range of audiences 
  • Strong customer service skills, with the ability to build rapport and negotiate with customers to reach a desired outcome 
  • Problem solving skills with the ability to identify and evaluate solutions 
Other requirements
  • This role requires some travel around our boroughs. You should have a valid driving licence or the equivalent mobility.
